Some Slovenian Questions For Belgians 10/29/2010

1.) Tell us something about your first impression on Sunday.

It was a bit strange and scary to get into a car with strange people they gave us a warm welcome in the family. Although we were very tired, it was nice that we got to see Ljubljana, by day and by night.

2.) What do you think about sport activities on Monday?

It was fun but these activities showed the difference between Belgians, who are very strict, and Slovenes, who are very loose. Both Slovenes and Belgians are active in sports.

3.) Is Slovenian language difficult to learn? (Monday)

Yes, it is very difficult to learn because of the cases and the pronunciation is really different than in Dutch.

4.) Do you like better that the exchange includes trips or would like to have more activities at school with your exchange students? (Tuesday and Thursday)

It was really nice to have some variation. We liked the trips very much because we got to see more from Slovenia except from Ljubljana.

5.) What did you like the most on Tuesday?

We liked Piran the most because we had a very nice view on the sea. The caves were very interesting and impressive to see. The horses in Lipica were beautiful but we expected to see them more.

6.) How much did you remember about our architect Plečnik? Do you think that you know more about Ljubljana now?

He used columns in most of his works because he wanted to make Ljubljana a neo-classical city. But there was never enough money because his projects were too grand. He made very wide bridges because he wanted them to be social, political and economical meeting places. It was interesting but it would have been better if the tour had been longer.

7.) Did you find the workshops interesting? (Wednesday)

The math workshop was confusing because the explanation was in Slovene. The other two workshops were quite interesting but the language was the problem there as well.

8.) Would you like to meet Slovene students more personally or do you like working with “statistics” (reports)? (Friday)

Maybe some active investigation would have been nicer.

9.) Describe generally how you spent this week with us, what would you change, would you add something? How do you understand the concept “exchange”?

It was very interesting to get to know the culture of Slovene teenagers. We would like better if the students and teachers spoke English the whole time.

In Belgium we will have intercultural evenings at school. It would have been nicer if we had an evening like that here as well.

We understand the concept “exchange” as we experienced it.

Some Belgians Questions For Slovenes 10/08/2010

1.What were your expectations of the week?

2.Did all your expectations came true?

3.What were the advantages and disadvantages of this exchange?

We expected to get to know you as persons and as a different culture. We also expected you to be interested in our culture, our way of life us as individuals. We were prepared to give you as much information as possible about that. We knew that in one week we couldn’t achieve all that but we still think that in some cases they were too polite and they didn’t tell their opinion. They were too tensed, reserved and the atmosphere wasn’t as relaxed as it could be. Sometimes you have to tell your opinion (tell if you don’t like something) in order to make it easier for your host. We understand »exchange« as sharing experience, opinions, way of life, culture, etc. So sometimes that wasn’t quite possible because of the reserved atmosphere.

4.How did you cope with an extra member in your family?

Generally we tried to adjust the rythm of this week to the exchange students, to make them feel as at home and to show them our family life, our relationships.

5.Did you find any Belgians habits strange?

We noticed:

-they don’t drink coffee at all

-they don’t live in such a hurry as we do (pedestrian crossing, getting ready in the morning, etc.)

-they drink a lot

-they don’t smoke at all

-they eat lighter food (they think our bread is heavy food)

6.Do you think that there are many differences between the Belgians and the Slovenes?

The main difference in school system, everyday life but it depends on character of individuals.

Waterfalls, lakes and swimming 10/07/2010

Day 5: Thursday (report by Belgians)

At 7:45 am we arrived at school. We thought it was too early. There we saw one friend and their exchanges again. We were talking about the evening before. After a couple of minutes the bus picked us up and drove us to Mojstrana. It was very cold outside. When we arrived we went to a museum about the mountains of Slovenia. First we saw a long movie. The museum was just built a couple of months ago. Then we got the tour trough the museum. It was a bit of a chaos. Normally, we would walk 4 km up hill then, but they decided to drive us with the bus. We were very happy about this because we were all too tired to walk. It was 15min in the bus. When we got out we saw the waterfall Peričnik. We all thought it was really beautiful, we took lots of pictures. We stayed there for about 20min. Then we went back in the bus and drove to Bled. It’s a very nice town with a beautiful lake and island. We ate kremšnite. It was very delicious, we had never ate it before. Our plate was em pty in one minute. After that we went to Bohinj. Most of the people went swimming, the others went bowling. The water was a bit too cold but it was fun. We wanted to eat something in the aquapark. After a nice shower we went back to Ljubljana.

It was an educational day! 10/06/2010

Day 4: Wednesday (report by Belgians)

We were split in two groups, the first one needed to get up earlier, they had to arrive at 9 o’clock. The other group was lucky, they could sleep longer. We got a tour by interesting guide in the center of Ljubljana. It didn’t took very long. After that we knew everything about Ljubljana.

Then we had 2 hours free. Most of us went shopping and eating. After lunch we were separated in three groups. There were three different workshops. The first one was about healthy food. We got a presentation how to feed yourself in a healthy way. We saw which food was important to eat and after that we could taste some of it. There were some special things to eat like milk, dark bread, some kind of cottage cheese, coconut oil… the second workshop was about exercising enough specially for people who sit a lot. First we got an educational explanation about it, then we got some examples of the exercises. It was funny to watch everybody doing it. The third workshop was on the computers. We needed to come the results of a survey about healthy food and moving of the population in Geel, Lju bljana, Pamplona, Barcs. We had to put the results of the counting in a statistics and write a summary. It was an educational day!

Caves, sea and horses 10/05/2010

Day 3 : Tuesday (report by Belgians)

We had to leave really early with the bus to the Škocjan caves. After hour and a half we arrived in Škocjan, where we got a guided tour. The caves were really big and impressive. In one chamber the guide turned off the lights and you couldn’t see anything anymore. There was also a river that went through the cave which we walked over across the bridge. If you looked down from the bridge it was really high and frightening. At the end of the cave we had a nice view on the waterfall. After visiting the cave we drove to Piran which is town at the seaside. We didn’t have enough time to see the town because we had to have lunch. An hour later we got on the bus to go to Lipica. In Lipica we had the tour where we saw horses and had a guide who told us about the horses. We were all tired from walking in the caves and waking up early, so we had some trouble listening. We also visited an art gallery of Avgust Černigoj. Finally we took the bus home where we could sleep and take a hot shower.
